Lightroom 3 Beta

Adobe Lightroom 3

I haven’t updated my Lightroom in a while.  Today I read a post that the beta version of Lightroom 3 is out.  I love Lightroom and it has increased my post-production effieiency.  Having read a few of the new items in Lightroom I’m in.  I downloaded the beta and we’ll see what I think of the new features.  Keep watching my blog for info.

A few of the features I’m really interested in seeing are the:
- State-of-the-art noise reduction
- Watermarking tool
- More flexible online publishing options
- Portable sharable slideshows with audio

The more that Adobe builds into Lightroom the happier I will be as a photographer. Right now I have 5 different programs that I use in post-producton. If I can slim that down to 3 (Lightroom, Photoshop and Portrait Professional) I would be very happy.

Image Re-editing

After yesterday’s blog post I decided to go back into some older photoshoots and re-edit some more pictures.  In today’s world of digital photography the photographer has to be the editor also.  In the past I just shot the film and let a developer and touch-up artist fix things (to my specifications of course).  Today the modern photographer needs to do it all.  Having spent 7 years in the magazine industry taught me a lot about digital editing and touch-up.  And with new software coming out all the time it’s amazing what can be done now.

Even though my studio is in Saginaw, MI the following two images were from a group photoshoot in Detroit.  The photoshoot was a portfolio building shoot for both the models and photographers.  These group shoots are a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

Editing a Pageant Headshot

Every pageant contestant would love the perfect headshot.  This can be tricky.  You can get the right make-up artist, pay a fortune for a great photographer and still end up with a picture that doesn’t look like you or is to touched up.  For most pageants the picture needs to look like the contestant.  If your picture is to touched up or has to much smoothing applied you can loose points.  There is a fine line between beauty and  . . . well . . . you!

This picture is an example of an attractive model that has bad skin.

I can critiquethis picture - because I took it (a few years ag0).  The coloring is off, the eyes aren’t in the best focus and the skin is not a good texture.  This would be a very easy picture for someone to over-glamorize.  With to much touch-up the picture would look plastic and perhaps not look like the model.

Following is a basic touch-up that I applied to make sure that the image still looks like the model but without looking to touched up.
model portrait touched-up

If you compare the two images there is a substantial amount of differences but they are subtle enough that it doesn’t look airbrushed and still looks like the same image – only better.

Now the last step in the process is to fix the color a little bit more.

Again I took this picture and I’m not really happy with it.  But I just saved a mediocre image and turned it into a picture that can be used as a head shot or in a portfolio.

Professional Business Portrait

There are just some articles that you come across on the Internet that are so good you have to share them.  I was reading one of thoes articles today.  The article is posting on www.publicityhound.com.  I am going to put some excerpts here.

If a newspaper or magazine reporter called you today for an interview, would you have a good-quality photo that you offer?

Most people don’t.

I surf the Internet at least once a week, looking for articles for The Publicity Hound, my subscription newsletter on how to generate free publicity. When I find an article my readers would like, I email the writer and ask for a photo. More times than not, I’m disappointed. Three out of four people have poor-quality photos or none at all.

You need a good-quality above-the-shoulders photo for publishers like me who want to use it online or offline and give you lots of free publicity.

If don’t have one, stop being a media mutt and start acting like a true Publicity Hound. Here are tips on how to get an inexpensive, good-quality photo.

In addition to the head shot, you might also consider a storytelling photo that shows you with “props” related to your event. A toy train collector who will be featured at a train show, for example, might be photographed behind her model train display. Weekly newspapers that don’t have photo staffs would welcome these types of photos.

Don’t rely on an amateur photographer

If your cousin has a new digital camera, or a cell phone with a camera, and offers to take your photo to save you money, use a professional instead. Trust me, the expense will be well worth it.

The Full Monty

I just started my second season as the photographer for the Saginaw Pit and Balcony theatre.  The first play/musical for the 2009-2010 season was The Full Monty.

The Full Monty

Having never seen the movie or read the book I wasn’t completely sure what to expect.  I did have an idea of what the storyline was though so I wasn’t going in blind.

Once again the stage set was phenomenal.  The musical was very well done and my wife said it was funnier than the movie.  I have enjoyed doing photography at the Pit and Balcony for the past year and look forward to another great season.

2009 Elegant Bridal Show

As part of my crazy weekend last weekend, I also attended the Elegant Bridal Show at the Birch Run Expo Center.  Being a wedding photographer for Image Artz out of Saginaw, MI it was my day to attend a bridal expo.  This was a large expo and seemed very well organized.  The Image Artz photography booth was right next to Studio 57 out of Clio.  This must have been one of the busiest booths of the show.  They were doing hair and makeup and had a person giving shoulder massages.  I am sure that the massage person was sore the next day!

Birch Run Expo Wedding Show

There was a fashion show and lots of give-aways.  I’m sure that the brides-to-be walked away with lots of great information and ideas.  Next time I hope that the event coordinator contacts my wife (now ex-wife) becuase they could have used some better models.

This must have been my weekend for Clio.  Saturday I had been at Crystal Gardens in Clio shooting a wedding and Sunday the Image Artz booth is located next to a salon from Clio.  While walking around at the bridal show I ran into the owner of Crystal Gardens and said hi because we had seen each other just a few hours before!

Richard Pryor Jr in Saginaw

If you read my previous posts this past weekend was crazy.  We had one more event for the weekend and we almost canceled it.  Richard Pryor Jr was performing at the Hancock Theatre in Old Town Saginaw.  We had said we were going to go but hadn’t been able to all weekend.  Sunday night was the only night we had free and we both though that we should really spend the night relaxing.  A last minute phone call as I was driving back to Saginaw from South lyon determined that we were going to go to the show.

Richard Pryor Jr

After the show we were glad we did.  We expected comedy from Richard Pryor Jr but got music instead.  And good music it was.  Richard can sing!  I was trying to remember who the local guitar player was that backed him up for the first set . . . and can’t remember.  The combination was magic.  Fantastic blues/jazz guitar was a great complement to Richard’s smooth voice.  When it was over we still got home in time to watch Desparate Housewives and get a good night sleep.

Cake Fight

After working the Fashion in Detroit on Friday it was off to Clio, MI on Saturday for a wedding at Crystal Gardens.  The day was cold and rainy but the wedding was beautiful and the bride and groom were a pleasure to work with.  This day I was working as a photographer for Mid-Michigan Wedding Photographers out of Saginaw, MI.

Wedding Cake Fight
The bride and groom went all out with the feeding of the wedding cake to each other – FANTASTIC!

Fashion in Detroit

My wife and I had the pleasure of attending the first Fashion in Detroit event.  We were only able to attend the event on the second day, Friday Oct 2, 2009.  The tent was comfortable with plenty of great seating that made it easy to see the runway no matter where you sat.  The lighting and sound was first class and the fashion was amazing.  We were able to do an interview with designer Kevin Christiana for The Review Magazine out of Saginaw.

Michigan Galaxy Preliminary Crown

My wife received a shipment on Wednesday night that included the 2010 Michigan Galaxy Pageants preliminary crown.  Of course we needed some good pictures to get this promoted on the website.  Our friend (or I should say 3rd daughter) happened to come to the house this same night.  Crown and cute girl in one place equals instant photo shoot!  I got out the camera and too a few shots.
