SHE IS CHRISTENED "PERTH" . . . AND PUT TO SEA - HER MAJESTY'S AUSTRALIAN SHIP PERTH - A GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER - IS SIDE-LAUNCHED BY DEFOE SHIPBUILDING COMPANY INTO THE SAGINAW RIVER, BAY CITY, MICH. LADY BEALE, WIFE OF AUSTRALIAN AMBASSADOR HOWARD HEALE, CHRISTENED THE DESTROYER ON SEPT. 26 BEFORE AN ESTIMATED 6,000 PERSONS. SPECTATORS AT THE CEREMONY INDLUDED MICHIGAN CONGRESSMAN ELFORD CEDARBURG; REAR ADM. WILLIAM A. BROCKETT, USN, CHIEF U.S. NAVY BUREAU OF SHIPS; AND REAR ADM. HOWARD A. YEAGER, USN, COMMANDANT OF THE NINTH NAVAL DISTRICT. PERTH, BUILT BY DEFOE SHIPBUILDING COMPANY, IS THE FIRST AUSTRALIAN SHIP TO BE BUILT IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY. SEA TRIALS ARE SET FOR NEXT SPRING IN LAKE HURON. UPON COMPLETION OF THE SHAKEDOWN CRUISE, THE SHIP WILL SAIL THROUGH THE SAINT LAWRENCE SEAWAY TO BOSTON, MASS., WHERE SHE IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMMISSIONED IN MAY 1965.
