Rent A Toyota Prius

Yesterday was an unusually warm day in mid-Michigan.  To take advantage of the weather I wanted to get outside.  Since I work all day (and all night and all weekend) I decided that a rental car website that I manage hadn’t been updated in a while and it would be a great day to get some pictures.  I grabbed the keys for a 2011 Toyota Prius and drove over to the Holliday Inn Express on Wilder Road in Bay City, MI.

If you are visiting the mid-Michigan area (Midland, Saginaw, Bay City) you can rent a Toyota Prius from Labadie Toyota.  Want more information?  Just visit http://labadierentacar.com

With gas prices going crazy this spring I may just rent one for my business trip to Detroit next week.  I crunched some numbers and with gas prices at $4 per gallon I could actually save money by renting a Prius instead of driving my SUV.  Plus the Prius is pretty cool and fun to drive.

2012 Scion iQ Pictures

I was able to take the new Scion iQ out for a test drive and get some pictures today. This little car get great gas mileage and is comfortable for 2 people. Even though there is a back seat there isn’t much leg room. You could fit a third person behind the passenger seat if it is moved forward. Without people in the back there is a surprising amount of storage room. The Scion iQ is fun to drive and with very responsive steering this little car is easy to park.

Car Photographer Michigan

Car Photographer Michigan

What makes a professional car photographer?  Is it that you create images for magazines or marketing materials?  What if you get paid all day to take pictures of cars for websites?

Well that’s what I do.  I call myself a professional car photographer because one a daily basis I take pictures of cars for a Michigan dealer groups websites.  It may not be art but it is a lot more difficult that one may think.  We had used outside companies in the past but they usually send a person that knows nothing about photography and all they are about is volume so the inventory pictures we less than desirable.  Car photography for dealer is a specialized field because they need to be done quickly and with high quality.

The rules of all photography apply to car photography.  Some of the basics are:

  • Isolate the subject
  • Fill the frame
  • Sharp focus
  • Proper exposure

Because cars are like a giant mirror, knowing how light works is key to getting a great picture of a car.  I’ve been thinking of creating a series of videos on the subject.

Limited Edition UFC Camaro: Michigan Photographer

2010 UFC Camaro #2 of 10Rosealee UFC Model Michigan

I’ve been using Model Mayhem to network with models for years.  A few months ago I got a contact from a model in the Grand Rapids area.  She said that she knew someone who had a limited edition car and she wanted to get pictures with it.  After about 2 months of trying to get the scheduling worked out we finally were able to get all parties together at a race track south of Grand Rapids Michigan.  It was a blazing hot and hazy afternoon but we were able to get some great pictures of the car . . . oh and the model (Rosealee) also.

After the shoot the car owner opened it up for a couple of runs on the drag strip.  Unfortunately the clutch in the Camaro was not able to handle the torque from the 650HP super-charged engine.  The car was towed to the local high-performance shop and hopefully was fixed and on the road to the next car show a few days later.

A special thanks to everyone who made this photo shoot a success including the car owner (hope the repairs didn’t cost to much) and US 131 Motorsports Park.  To view more images from this shoot visit:

Another Indoor Car Studio

Labadie Toyota Photo Studio

We are working on another indoor car studio in Bay City.  This time at the Labadie Toyota dealership.  Shown here is builder extraordinaire Mike Kowalski.  He has done wonders putting into place some of my ideas that he wasn’t to sure about when the project started.  He was able to custom build the light boxes that contain 6,000 watts of daylight balanced light.  Now that the weather is getting a little better in Michigan, Mike is trying to get the floor warm enough to paint.  Then it’s time to hang the curtains and off we go!

I look forward to being able to pull some cars in and test the studio in about a week.

Indoor Car Photo Studio

At my day job I take pictures of cars to put for sale on the Internet. As with most products, when marketing new or pre-owned vehicles via the Internet, high quality images of your cars is an important part of attracting potential customers and compelling them to act. For years we have been taking the pictures outside. This is nice but not always consistant and there are weather issues. Of course it is hard to find enough space for an indoor studio (we need to be able to fit Escalade ESV’s). The other issue is quality and amount of light.

We decided on high output florescent lighting. We purchased enough fixtures to be able to put out the equivalent of 4,500 watts of light. This additional lighting with the regular florescent fixtures that were already in place should allow us to shoot using a shutter speed of 1/60 with ISO200. The lights also needed to be daylight balanced. To keep price down I got 5,000 k lights. I figured this is close enough and after painting the walls with a 14% grey the auto WB in the camera should get the color very close.

We are about a week away from the studio being done and I can’t wait to see the first results. At this point I may need more light so we’ve also ordered some softbox lights on a stand with rollers.

My first time photographing a NASCAR race.  It was a lot of fun and a little scary at the same time.  Hanging over the racetrack was a bit of a rush.
