New Photography Backdrop Stand

sp-backdrop-standI have been using a borrowed backdrop stand at my photography studio for 3 years.  I am embarrassed to admit that the stand broke about a year ago and I haven’t had the means to purchase a new one to replace it.  The other day my photographer friend who owned the stand mentioned that he had a photo shoot where he needed the stand.  I had to admit that the stand was broken and has been for a while.  Obliged to replace the broken equipment I contacted the manufacturer about the cost for replacing the broken stand.  I found out that to replace one stand was about $30 less then buying the entire backdrop stand kit.  Just as I was about the order the entire kit I decided to do some research and see what I could find in the same price range.  After some research I found that there were a lot of people that were not very impressed with the Photoflex kit quality just as I was not.  More research and I found great reviews of the Square Perfect backdrop stand kit.  The biggest selling point was that the reviews were saying that it was very stable and well made.  The previous Photofex kit I found the aluminum tubing very soft (that is what bent and caused the stand to be useless) and weak.

The photo shoot was one day away and the Square Perfect kit had not arrived yet.  I was a little nervous.  Getting home from work I saw the box by the back door.  Excitedly I opened the box and inspected the contents.  I’m not sure but the stands appear to be a hard plastic (don’t take my word for it).  The stands are very stable and appear to be well made.  The big test will be the shoot tomorrow.  Will the backdrop hold up to a 16×20 heavy muslin backdrop and a dozen pre-teen wrestlers.

Image Re-editing

After yesterday’s blog post I decided to go back into some older photoshoots and re-edit some more pictures.  In today’s world of digital photography the photographer has to be the editor also.  In the past I just shot the film and let a developer and touch-up artist fix things (to my specifications of course).  Today the modern photographer needs to do it all.  Having spent 7 years in the magazine industry taught me a lot about digital editing and touch-up.  And with new software coming out all the time it’s amazing what can be done now.

Even though my studio is in Saginaw, MI the following two images were from a group photoshoot in Detroit.  The photoshoot was a portfolio building shoot for both the models and photographers.  These group shoots are a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
